It is very difficult to enumerate all the fairs & festivals since in India, there are ‘Sat Var Nau Tyohar’ (there are seven days in a week & Festivals are nine).Still we are trying to list below a very few most important Fairs & Festivals.

TEEJ Festival - is celebrated in July-August, a grand royal procession winds its ways for two days through the old city. Thousands of people throng the city to witness this grand event. Teej is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati and this time it is married women who pray for a happy and long married life. It is also the festival of Swings, decorated with flowers & hang from trees.

GANGAUR Fair – the most important fair of the state and is observed in March-April with fervor and devotion. Women take out procession singing songs through streets carrying images of divine couple, Issar and Gangaur, manifestations of lord Shiva and Parvati, on their heads, are worshipped by women particularly by those who are unmarried and pray for a consort. Beside this, a mega royal procession is also taken out in the city.

ELEPHANT Festival – the festival is held on the eve of Holi (in March) in Jaipur and has several attractions like elephant Polo. The festival begins with a procession of elephants, camels, horses & folk dances. The elephants are decorated to the full with bright colors. Female elephants are made to wear anklets and a prize is given for the most decorated elephant. Holi on elephant back is one of the major attractions.

HOLI – Dhulandi (in March) it is a festival of colors; people apply, spray, throw colors on each other, sing, dance & enjoy. It is a festival of love, affection & brotherhood.

DASHERA Festival – is celebrated (in October). It is celebrated the triumph of good over evil. Huge effigies of the ten headed Ravana & his brothers stuffed with thousands of fire crackers are set afire and the people begin to rejoice.

DIWALI – (in November) is a festival of lights, people decorates their homes with earthen oil lamps & electric lightings, shops & markets are also decorated with lights. The whole city immersed in lights. People fire crackers, prays Goddess of wealth Laxmi, wear new cloths and eat & distribute sweets.

MAKAR SAKRATRI – (in January) is a festival of kites, people fly kites on this whole day.
You will find the whole city on their roof tops flying kites & shouting ‘Vo kata…. Vo Mara ‘.


(Around Jaipur)

Pushkar Fair – is held in November easily the most identifiable of all the fairs of the state, the Pushkar fair is held in November in Pushkar in Ajmer (which is 120 Km. away from Jaipur), where an eighth century temple of Brahma, draws the faithful. The place has about 400 shrines and temples around the lake. Pilgrims bathe at the ghats and pray at the temple. Traders Strike deals at the world’s largest camel fair, although horses are also sold. People gather together to camp in the desert and entertain each other with songs and dances and cook meals over camp fire. The camel, horse and donkey races are also popular and draw huge attendance.

Urs – held in June. Most significant pilgrimage destination equally important for Hindus & Muslims is Dargah Sharif Tombs of Sufi Saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer (which is 120 Km. away from Jaipur). A grand urs is organized & devotees from all over the world come over there for prayer.
